CBS greenlights comedy pilot about 70-year-old Nebraska woman chasing Broadway

CBS has ordered a pilot for a single-camera comedy centred on an unconventional protagonist: a septuagenarian with zero stage experience pursuing her lifelong dream on Broadway.

Titled "Hilda! (In Lights!)," the project follows its eponymous lead, a 70-year-old woman from Nebraska who relocates to New York City to make her mark in theatre. According to Variety, the logline presents the premise as "one of those classic shows about a plucky small-town optimist who moves to the big city to pursue her lifelong dream of starring on Broadway. There's just one teeny, tiny, totally inconsequential difference… our hero Hilda is a 70-year-old woman from Nebraska with absolutely no experience."

Writer and executive producer Abbey Caldwell developed the project, which evolved from three scripts announced in development at the studio in April. The series is produced by CBS Studios, with non-writing executive producers including Will Graham, Max Linsky and Tonia Davis for Invitation Media.

Refreshing the fish-out-of-water formula

The comedy taps into well-worn territory—the naïve dreamer arriving in the city—but inverts a key element by centring an older woman as the lead. This positioning stands against the grain of most television narratives, which historically skew towards younger protagonists navigating similar journeys. By placing age at the heart of the conceit rather than treating it as an obstacle to overcome, the series signals a departure from how older characters are typically framed in comedy.

The premise also echoes established television structures, from "I Love Lucy" to "Murphy Brown," which centred women of a certain age pursuing ambitions in male-dominated or youth-oriented industries. In this instance, the setting is Broadway itself—a world where age often signals the end of a career rather than its beginning.

What's next for CBS

The pilot order arrives amid CBS's broader slate of new programming. The network has greenlit vampire comedy "Eternally Yours" from Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, known for "Ghosts," which will premiere on 8 October alongside legal drama "Cupertino" from Robert and Michelle King. Matthew Gray Gubler will headline dramedy "Einstein" in the second half of the 2026-2027 season, playing Albert Einstein's directionless great-grandson. The network is also launching "NCIS: New York," an "NCIS" spinoff featuring LL Cool J reprising his role as Sam Hanna, on 6 October.
