Actor Geno Segers Exits Hadestown After Apology for Transgender Comments
Broadway actor Geno Segers apologises for transgender comments and exits Hadestown production following online backlash.
Actor Geno Segers has apologised for past social media comments about the transgender community after facing public backlash, leading to his departure from the Broadway revival of Hadestown.
On Monday, Segers posted a statement to Instagram acknowledging the harm caused by his words. "I wish to extend my most sincere apologies to everyone impacted by my words," he wrote. "While I never intended to inflict harm, I recognise that the impact of my statements is what matters most. I am fully committed to listening, educating myself, and elevating my standards. I will work tirelessly to earn the opportunity to make things right."
Following the online reaction to the resurfaced comments, the producers of Hadestown announced on Sunday that Segers would no longer join the production. In a joint statement, they said: "The producers of 'Hadestown' and Geno Segers have mutually agreed that Mr. Segers will no longer join the Broadway production. Additional casting will be announced shortly."
Taking Responsibility
Segers extended a second apology directly to the Hadestown team. "To the cast, creative team and producers, please accept my sincere apologies for the stress my actions have brought to this production," he said. "I accept full responsibility for my words and acknowledge the necessity of immediate accountability."
He concluded by expressing support for his replacement and the broader cast. "I extend my wholehearted support to the cast, crew and my replacement. I wish you all tremendous success during your run. I have complete confidence that each of you will be phenomenal."
About Hadestown
Written by Anaïs Mitchell, Hadestown merges Greek mythology with contemporary storytelling, drawing on the tales of Orpheus and Eurydice alongside Hades and Persephone. The production pairs these classical narratives with a folk and jazz soundtrack.
The principal cast taking the stage at the Walter Kerr Theatre from 1 September includes Kayko as Orpheus, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Eurydice, Norbert Leo Butz as Hermes and Amber Iman as Persephone. Casting for the role of Hades will be announced in the coming weeks.
