This neurological distinction explains why responsiveness to hypnosis varies widely across the population.
Approximately 25 percent of people appear resistant to hypnosis altogether, often due to skepticism about its effectiveness or unwillingness to participate. Even those with high hypnotizability may need multiple sessions before experiencing noticeable effects. The process typically involves a trained professional using mental imagery and repetitive verbal cues to guide a person into a relaxed, receptive state.
Clinical applications have expanded beyond popular imagination. Safety concerns are minimal when hypnosis is administered by a qualified practitioner. Reported adverse effects are rare and typically mild, including headaches, dizziness, or temporary anxiety. One documented risk is the potential for false memory formation, which warrants caution in certain therapeutic contexts.
Self-hypnosis is also possible, requiring only a quiet environment, openness, and practice. Many people use self-directed techniques to reinforce positive behavioral changes without professional intervention.
