Actor Hwang Jung-min’s stalker case: prosecution seeks 10 million won fine
Prosecutors seek 10 million won fine in stalking case against actor Hwang Jung-min, up from initial 3 million won penalty.

The prosecution has sought a 10 million won fine against a defendant accused of stalking South Korean actor Hwang Jung-min, according to local media. The case was heard at Uijeongbu District Court's Goyang branch on 11 August, where prosecutors outlined reasons for the increased penalty.
The defendant faces charges under South Korea's stalking law. Prosecutors cited the prolonged duration of the alleged harassment, the excessive frequency of contact attempts, and threatening posts made on social media as aggravating factors. They also highlighted that the alleged victim has filed a petition requesting strict punishment.
This marks a significant increase from an earlier summary order that had imposed a 3 million won fine. During the hearing, prosecutors requested the trial be held in camera to prevent secondary harm to the victim, but the court rejected this, citing the principle of open proceedings. The bench noted that while privacy matters may arise during questioning, such concerns do not meet the threshold for closed-door proceedings.
The defendant's legal team maintained a not-guilty stance during closing arguments, asserting the alleged contact was not unilateral and that the alleged victim had also initiated communication. The defendant likewise claimed the interactions were mutual rather than one-sided stalking over the two-year period in question.
