West Ham’s Academy Ready to Challenge for First-Team Spots

West Ham's new director of player recruitment Nils Koppen has signaled a structured approach to academy development, informing youngsters that decisions on loan placements will come after pre-season fixtures, according to sources familiar with the club's planning.

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo intends to use upcoming friendlies against Southend United, Stevenage, Rangers, and Magdeburg to assess readiness for the Championship push. A recent behind-closed-doors victory over Colchester United, which featured 12 academy prospects, offered an early glimpse of contenders.

Mohamadou Kante stands out as the most prominently discussed prospect. The 20-year-old midfielder made 14 first-team appearances last season and has attracted interest from Ligue 1 clubs Marseille, Monaco, and Lyon. Under-21s manager Mark Robson has compared him to former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira. With five years remaining on his contract, Nuno intends to retain him, though the club acknowledges growing external attention.

Ezra Mayers, named West Ham's young player of the year, earned a contract extension and England Under-19 recognition following a breakout campaign. Across six substitute Premier League appearances, the 19-year-old demonstrated composure and is viewed as capable of contributing to Nuno's plans immediately.

George Earthy faces a pivotal moment in his career. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder played 45 minutes in the Colchester fixture as a number 10, having completed a four-month loan at Bristol City last season that yielded only two Championship starts. Nuno's preference for a wing-back system creates uncertainty about Earthy's role, making this pre-season critical for his future.

Lewis Orford, a 20-year-old midfielder, received limited loan minutes at Stevenage last season (16 minutes in League One) before his spell was cut short. However, midfield turnover—with Edson Alvarez's status uncertain, Tomas Soucek sidelined by ankle injury, and James Ward-Prowse likely departing—may create an opening. Orford received a Premier League debut against Crystal Palace under former manager Graham Potter in January 2025 and was subsequently invited by England manager Thomas Tuchel to train with the senior squad at St George's Park.

Joshua Ajala, 19, scored seven goals across 14 Premier League 2 appearances for the under-21s. An England Under-20 international, he signed a contract extension through summer 2028 in March and appeared in the Colchester friendly after previous cup involvement. Nuno is expected to continue monitoring his development.

Finlay Herrick, a goalkeeper, made his debut in West Ham's FA Cup quarter-final loss to Leeds United in April when injuries necessitated his introduction. With Lukasz Fabianski's release and Alphonse Areola's expected departure, Herrick could serve as understudy to Mads Hermansen. Nuno described him in April as "a young goalkeeper with talent, he played for England's youth team," noting the club's intention to develop him.

Other prospects under consideration include Kaelan Casey, the 21-year-old centre-back who made 16 League One appearances for Leyton Orient while avoiding relegation, and Keiber Lamadrid, the 22-year-old winger-cum-midfielder whose £1 million permanent transfer from Venezuelan side Deportivo La Guaira was finalized in June with a five-year deal.
