Sumi Jo becomes first Asian recipient of Maria Callas Special Award

World-renowned soprano Sumi Jo has become the first Asian artist to receive the Maria Callas Special Award, cementing her place among opera's most celebrated figures.

Jo received the honour at a ceremony held on 2 August in Verona, Italy, according to her agency. The award, now in its 12th iteration, was established in 2014 to commemorate the legendary soprano Maria Callas's Italian opera debut in the same city on 2 August, 1947.

Previous recipients include acclaimed opera director Franco Zeffirelli and renowned baritones Renato Bruson and Leo Nucci, all of whom shaped the landscape of classical music. Jo's win reflects the global recognition she has garnered across four decades on stage.

"I will cherish this as one of the most meaningful moments of my life, as it bears the name of one of the greatest artists of all time," Jo said in response to the award.

The timing marks a significant moment in Jo's career. She is celebrating the 40th anniversary of her international debut this year, a milestone punctuated by multiple commitments. In May, she released her commemorative album Continuum, and she has been hosting the second edition of the International Singing Competition that bears her name. A large-scale overseas tour is planned for the second half of 2026, and she is scheduled to perform at the Seoul Arts Center in Seocho District on 4 September.

Jo's achievement underscores the growing prominence of Asian artists in classical music's highest echelons. As one of the world's most accomplished sopranos, her recognition by this prestigious award reflects not only her technical mastery but also her sustained contribution to the art form across multiple continents and decades.
