SK-II and Pop Mart Celebrate Authentic Beauty with Limited-Edition Crybaby Essence
SK-II and Pop Mart launch a Crybaby-themed essence that celebrates emotional authenticity as the foundation of skincare.

SK-II has partnered with collectible toy maker Pop Mart to launch a limited-edition version of its flagship Facial Treatment Essence, featuring the beloved Crybaby character. The collaboration pairs the Japanese skincare brand's 40-year philosophy of natural radiance with Pop Mart's emotionally expressive art-toy aesthetics.
At the heart of the campaign is a reframing of vulnerability as strength. Crybaby—a character recognised for its expressive eyes and teardrop imagery—typically embodies the interior emotional experiences many people navigate. In Pop Mart's creative universe, tears represent catharsis and authenticity rather than weakness. SK-II aligns with this perspective: the brand argues that genuine confidence stems from accepting one's true self, and that radiant skin flows from emotional alignment.
The Product and Formula
The limited edition retains the core formula of SK-II's Facial Treatment Essence, which remains over 90 percent Pitera, the brand's proprietary fermentation-derived ingredient. Pitera contains more than 50 micronutrients including vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids, designed to mirror the skin's natural hydration compounds and enable deep absorption.
The visual redesign brings youthful, whimsical energy through Crybaby's aesthetic, whilst preserving the product base that has accompanied generations of users globally. The packaging evokes affection, connection and emotional sincerity.
Campaign Strategy
The campaign's centrepiece is a series of short films following Crybaby through a vivid, dreamlike world. The character experiences moments of anticipation, wonder and discovery before the essence appears as an unexpected touchpoint. A signature scene depicts Crybaby performing SK-II's distinctive "PAT PAT" tapping application method—a playful moment that grounds the emotional narrative in skincare ritual.
The collaboration targets younger consumers invested in personality expression, mental wellness and individuality. Pop Mart's collectible culture intersects with SK-II's skincare heritage, positioning the essence as a daily practice that mirrors emotional self-acceptance.
The Message
The partnership distils a single philosophy: authentic beauty unfolds when you permit yourself to feel fully. Emotional expression and bare skin—unadorned by heavy makeup—can coexist as a statement of confidence. SK-II frames this not as a product benefit alone, but as a values alignment between two brands that prioritise honest self-presentation over filtered perfection.
