Regenerative beauty has become one of the most talked-about wellness trends in Asia's dermatology clinics and medical spas. Rather than simply masking signs of ageing, the philosophy centres on stimulating the skin's natural repair mechanisms from within.
The terminology can feel overwhelming. Medical spas and dermatologists now use terms like biostimulators, exosomes and PRP—some rooted in established science, others still evolving in regulatory frameworks across the region. Before pursuing any treatment, understanding what these terms actually mean matters.
Biostimulators: Triggering Collagen from Within
Biostimulators are injectables designed to encourage your body to produce collagen gradually, rather than providing immediate filler effects like traditional hyaluronic acid treatments. Results typically appear after several months but can last longer than conventional fillers.
The procedure involves injecting the substance into deeper skin layers via needle or cannula at a specialist clinic. Mild swelling, tenderness or bruising may appear for a few days, sometimes extending two weeks depending on location. Treatment typically requires two to three sessions spaced weeks apart, with maintenance every one to two years.
One critical distinction: unlike HA fillers, collagen-stimulating products cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase if results are unsatisfactory. Efficacy varies based on product type, blending technique, injection placement and practitioner experience.
Exosomes: Cellular Messengers
Exosomes are cell-derived vesicles increasingly used in aesthetic treatments, typically applied as serums or topicals alongside technology-based procedures. They function like cellular messengers, supporting recovery, stimulating collagen production and improving skin quality after laser or microneedling treatments.
Exosomes are usually applied immediately after laser or microneedling sessions, with some brands offering serums or ampoules for at-home use during recovery. Recovery time depends primarily on the primary procedure, not the exosome application itself.
A significant caveat: many countries, including several in Asia, have not yet approved exosomes as standalone aesthetic treatments. Regulatory oversight, ingredient sourcing and manufacturing processes vary considerably between brands.
PRP: Your Own Blood's Growth Factors
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) uses growth factors extracted from your own blood to support tissue recovery. The blood is drawn, centrifuged to isolate the platelet-rich portion, then injected or applied to treatment areas.
For facial treatments, expect mild redness, pinpoint bleeding, swelling or bruising for several days. Scalp treatments may cause tenderness for a few days without visible external marks. Standard protocols involve three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with maintenance every six to twelve months.
Results depend heavily on centrifuge systems, platelet concentration and clinic protocols. Evidence for hair loss treatment is relatively established, though outcomes vary.
