John Oliver Commits to HBO Through 2027 Amid Ownership Uncertainty

John Oliver is staying at HBO for now, though his latest contract reflects the instability roiling the network's parent company. The "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver" host has extended his deal through the end of 2027, according to Variety.

The extension marks a significant shift in renewal strategy. Rather than HBO's customary three-year pickups, Oliver's new agreement covers only one year—a signal of the uncertainty surrounding the proposed Paramount Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

Oliver has not hidden his concerns about the takeover. During a March episode, he addressed the prospect directly, saying: "Yeah, not great news. In fact, if I may quote anyone who's ever accidentally sat on their Roku remote, I'm in Paramount now… how the f-ck do I get out of here?" He has previously criticised Paramount's settlement with the Trump administration over its lawsuit against CBS's "60 Minutes" and expressed disapproval of Bari Weiss's role at CBS News.

A Decade of Emmy Dominance

"Last Week Tonight" premiered in 2014 and is now in its 13th season. The show has become one of television's most awarded programmes, with 28 Emmy wins. Over the past eight years alone, it has dominated the scripted variety series and variety writing categories. The programme also holds two Peabody Awards, five Critics Choice Awards, two GLAAD Media Awards, six Writers Guild Awards and eight consecutive PGA Awards.

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, praised the show's consistent quality when it was last renewed for three years in December 2023. "Over the past decade, John and his exceptional team have combined deep research and intelligence with cutting humor to tackle a broad range of subjects, both widely discussed and unconventional," Bloys said at the time.

What Comes Next

Oliver resumed new episodes this week following a summer break, dedicating much of the show to dissecting Donald Trump's recent actions. His willingness to tackle politically contentious material could present complications should Paramount Skydance—which has cultivated closer ties to the Trump administration—complete its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
