Modest Mouse Removes Guitarist Simon O’Connor From Tour Following Inappropriate Messages Allegation
Modest Mouse has removed guitarist Simon O'Connor from its tour following allegations of inappropriate messages to a minor fan. Seth Jabour replaces him.

Modest Mouse has removed guitarist Simon O'Connor from its upcoming tour dates following allegations that he sent inappropriate messages to a minor fan, according to an announcement on the band's Instagram account.
O'Connor, who has played guitar for the indie rock band since 2021, was replaced by Seth Jabour of post-punk revival act Les Savy Fav. The decision came after a 17-year-old fan posted screenshots on the r/ModestMouse subreddit documenting private Instagram messages exchanged between themselves and O'Connor. The fan stated they were 16 years old at the time of the messages, with their birth date visible in their Instagram biography.
The messages in question included sexually explicit content. In a statement posted to Reddit, O'Connor acknowledged the exchange and apologised, claiming he had initially mistaken the fan for a frequent online troll and intended his initial message as "almost a 'gotcha'." He wrote: "I'm genuinely sorry to the person who received those messages. They didn't deserve to be put in that position, and I'm sorry for the stress and attention this has brought them."
The Context of O'Connor's Role
O'Connor's departure marks a significant moment for Modest Mouse, the Portland-based band fronted by Isaac Brock. Since joining in 2021, O'Connor had become part of the band's live and recording lineup during a period of renewed activity. His removal signals the band's response to allegations that violated community standards around artist conduct towards minors.
Industry Response and Precedent
The swift action by Modest Mouse aligns with heightened scrutiny across the music industry regarding artist-fan interactions and appropriate conduct online. Similar allegations in recent years have prompted immediate responses from bands and labels, particularly when minors are involved. The use of official social channels to announce the change reflects a trend towards transparency rather than quiet departures.
Jabour's stepping in as replacement adds continuity to the tour schedule. Les Savy Fav, known for their experimental post-punk approach, operates in adjacent musical circles to Modest Mouse, suggesting a fitting sonic match for the remaining dates.
Moving Forward
The incident underscores ongoing conversations within music communities about boundaries between artists and fans, particularly where digital platforms blur traditional separation lines. As touring resumes, the replacement maintains the band's commitments while signalling that such conduct carries professional consequences.
